A Dental Implant is a small, titanium screw that is placed into the
jaw bone in the upper and/or lower arches of the mouth. It is used
to replace one or more missing teeth, or to stabilize dentures. Titanium
is a biocompatible metal that is also used in knee or hip replacements.
The implant acts like the root of a natural tooth. A crown is then
fabricated around the implant.
In cases where there are multiple missing teeth, or where the patient
has previously had dentures, multiple implants are placed in the mouth
to allow for implant-supported bridges or denture. With proper care,
good dental hygiene, and healthy life style the success rate for dental
implants is very high. Some failed implants can be attributed to an
unhealthy lifestyle (smoking), or to poor dental hygiene.
