What are the benefits of Laser Dentistry?

Patient Comfort

In our office, we use Waterlase laser.  This type of laser uses a combined YSGG energy and spray of water, a process called HydroPhotonics, to perform a wide range of dental procedures on teeth, gum and bone more comfortably.  Typically, with Waterlase, we use fewer shots and less anaesthesia reducing patient anxiety and providing a more relaxing dental experience.  Often for small cavities, no anaesthetic is required.  So, It is great for kids!!!

Heat, vibration and pressure are the primary causes of pain associated with the use of the traditional dental drill.  Since cutting both hard and soft tissues (teeth and gums) with the Waterlase does not generate heat, vibration or pressure, many dental procedures can be performed with fewer or no shots, less need for anaesthesia, less use of the drill and fewer numb lips.

Less Bleeding and Swelling in Gum procedures.

Additionally, due to its conservative, gentle cutting action and coagulating capabilities, the Waterlase performs many soft tissue (gum) procedures with little or no bleeding and less swelling.  These are few of the applications of lasers on the soft tissues:

  • Frenectomies.

Frenum by definition is a fold of mucous membrane.  In the mouth there are frenum of the lips that extend from the gums to the mid-line of the lower or upper lip, and the frenum of the tongue, that extends from the floor of the mouth to the midline of the underside of the tongue.
Frenectomy of the lips are performed in certain cases after the orthodontics to avoid spacing between of the upper or lower central incisors.
Frenectomy of the tongue is indicated when it interferes with speech (lisping in children) or even sucking in infants.

The use of waterlase in these cases virtually eliminates any anaesthesia, and there is no need to use scalpel.  Since scalpel is not used, there is virtually no bleeding and the recovery in quick.

  • Cosmetic contouring of the gum tissue
  • Crown lengthening (removing gum and bone to expose more tooth)
  • Periodontal therapy (Reduction of the pockets in gum disease)
  • Excision of minor growths and biopsies

The use of laser allows quick, bloodless removal of lesions for biopsy.
