Underneath the tooth 's outer shell is the nerve chamber containing blood vessels, lymph vessels and nerves. This chamber is called the pulp. When the pulp becomes infected due to deep cavity, fracture or trauma, root canal treatment is performed in order to save the tooth. The procedure involves removing the diseased pulp and reshaping the canal(s). The canal is filled to prevent recontamination of the tooth. The tooth is then permanently sealed with a crown.
