Toothprinting is an identification tool that provides valuable information for the authorities in case the child becomes lost or is missing. It provides parents and the police a DNA sample, a scent sample and a toothprint of the child. The procedure is fast and comfortable. The child bites down on a softened wafer for few seconds and the hardened wafer containing saliva is placed in a plastic bag which should be stored in a dark place. Ideally, it is recommended to update the toothprints yearly. In lieu of that, the following schedule is recommended:
Initial impression: Age 3
Update: age 7(or after the upper and lower incisors and the first permanent molars have erupted)
Update: age 12 or 13
