Front teeth that are chipped, gapped, stained, or mal-aligned can be restored using veneers. These are thin porcelain shells that when bonded to your teeth can brighten teeth, hide discoloration, and improve the smile's appearance. They are more conservative that the use of crowns, and provide stronger, longer lasting, more aesthetic alternative than bonding.
Veneers require two dental appointments. In the first appointment, the teeth are prepared by removing a small amount of the enamel from the front of the tooth. An impression of the teeth is done which is sent to the lab for the fabrication of the porcelain veneers. Temporary veneers are fabricated and placed on the teeth until the next visit.
On the next appointment, the veneers are bonded to the teeth using the latest bonding agents for superior strength.. They are trimmed, contoured and polished.
Veneers last for 10-15 years. The longevity depends directly on how one looks after their teeth. They may need replacing if the teeth redecay, or due to gum disease and recession. Hence maintaining good oral hygiene and visiting the dentist for regular check up and cleanings are very important. As well, the veneers may need replacing due to trauma. If you participate in contact sports or have a habit of grinding your teeth, then you will need a mouthguard to protect your teeth. Porcelain just like natural enamel will wear and fracture under abnormal loads such as chewing pens or opening bottles, etc.
