Our goal in our practice is to use a holistic approach to conventional dentistry. Biological dentistry (also referred to as holistic dentistry, or Natural dentistry) takes into consideration that oral cavity is not an isolated entity and that there is direct link between oral health and the rest of the body. The mouth is essentially a gateway to the rest of the body. It is recognized in the medical community the link between periodontal disease (gum disease) and cardiovascular disease and diabetes. It should also not come as a surprise that the choice of dental materials placed in the mouth also has an impact to the rest of the body.
The goal of biological dentistry is to seek the safest and least toxic way to accomplish the goals of modern dentistry. Our approach is to incorporate Mercury-free, Mercury-safe, and Biocompatible dental materials into modern dentistry.
In our practice we have not placed mercury fillings for the last 20 years. Amalgam restorations contain 50% mercury. There is scientific evidence that amalgam fillings release mercury to the oral cavity and overtime cause systemic harm.
Since 2004, we have been practicing Mercury-safe dentistry. In order to minimize the risk of exposure to mercury vapours, we have been following rigorous and innovative safety measures to remove the existing Amalgam fillings and replacing them with non-mercury restorations. We don’t advocate indiscriminate replacement of Amalgam restorations. Our goal is to only replace the mercury fillings that are failing or breaking down or there is recurrent decay in the tooth.
Biocompatibility and biological dentistry
In cases of immunocompromised patients, patients with autoimmune disorders or highly sensitive individuals, we recommend biocompatibility testing. This testing gives us information to select biocompatible dental materials to reduce the chances of adverse reactions to reactive components of dental materials. The testing panel is done against 94 targeted chemical groups (Antigen List) and then the information is compared to the formulations present in the dental materials for any systemic risk.
Heavy Metal detoxification and biological dentistry
There are various ways to do heavy meal detoxification and chelation.
Mercury detoxification or chelation is the method used to remove or extract mercury that has accumulated in the tissues. After the removal of the amalgam fillings, you may wish to be referred to a naturopathic physician that has experience in mercury chelation.
There are different methods of chelation for mercury. The naturopathic physician will recommend one that is appropriate based on the levels of mercury in your body. The following are commonly used chelating agents for mercury:
Sodium Dimercaptopropanesul-fonate (DMPS):
This is a strong chelating agent that is administered intravenously. It extracts mercury from lower case many organs and tissues, however, it does not cross the blood-brain barrier.
Dimercaptosuccinic Acid (DMSA):
This is a compound similar to DMPS, but less potent. It is administered orally. It crosses the blood-brain barriers, and will require more treatments.
This is a natural chelating agent for the extraction of heavy metals.
